Why Tallow Has a Natural Smell
Tallow comes from cattle fat that has been rendered and purified for use. Even after careful rendering and filtering, real tallow can still carry a mild natural aroma. That scent can vary based on sourcing, rendering, freshness, and whether the tallow has been deodorized.
Because we use 100% grass-fed, grass-finished tallow from American cattle, and because we do not deodorize it, our Unscented balm may have a light natural tallow smell.
Some people describe it as mild, warm, creamy, or simply “real.” Others are more sensitive to it. Scent is personal.
Why We Do Not Use Deodorized Tallow
Deodorized tallow has gone through extra processing to reduce or remove scent. That can make the finished product smell more neutral, but it also moves the ingredient farther away from its natural state.
Our view is that skincare does not need to be over-complicated. We prefer fewer ingredients and less processing when possible. We render, filter, and whip our tallow so it becomes a smooth, lotion-like balm, but we do not try to erase every sign that it came from a real traditional ingredient.
